조산아 산모의 모유는 조산아의 신체적 성숙, 면역학적 요구, 성장에 가장 적합하다고 알려져 있습니다. 모유를 먹는 조산아는 면역 체계가 증강되고, 위장관 성숙이 더 잘되며, 이를 통해 영양소 이용률이 증가됩니다. 모유를 먹는 경우 분유를 먹을 때와는 달리 체중 증가가 지방과 수분 뿐만 아니라 뼈와 다른 조직에 의해서도 이루어집니다.

또한 모유는 조산아를 병원균으로부터 보호해줄 수 있으며 아토피 가족력이 있는 아기의 알레르기 발생 위험을 감소시킵니다. 조산아의 망막증은 분유를 먹는 조산아에게서 2.3배 높으며 모유를 먹은 조산아가 그렇지 않은 경우보다 더 높은 지능 지수(IQ)를 나타날 정도로 인지 및 뇌신경 발달에도 도움을 줍니다.
